{Review}: Revlon Colorstay in Rain Forest

Revlon Colorstay Nail Enamel in Rain Forest

I picked up this beautiful, glittery green when I stopped to get Revlon Colorstay in French Roast.  Due to a BOGO50 special at CVS Pharmacy, I got both, but I ended up loving this one much more than French Roast.  If you read that review, you learned that the staying power was below par.  The Rain Forest, however, lasted for about five days before I got sick of it and changed it.  I'm pretty sure the glitter bits had a lot to do with it's staying power, as they sort of grab on to the nail a lot more than a solid hue.

I really love the depth of this green.  It shimmers and shines and reminds me of a green version of Dorothy's shoes in The Wizard of Oz.

{Sale Alert}: Kohl's Faux Leather Biker Jacket

I rarely shop at Khol's, mainly because I simply forget there is one in my town.  I had some down time the other day and was in need of a gift for a person that is difficult to shop for and I immediately thought about Khol's and their plethora of randomness.  If you've never been there, they have a little bit of everything, and sure enough, I found a gift.  I also found a great sale!  I picked up a few things {most of which aren't even offered on the website anymore, so I didn't bother to post them here}, but my favorite was this awesome faux leather biker style jacket.  It's a very fun jacket and I have already paired it with a few different looks.  The best part is the price.  The jacket regularly was priced at $84 which I would never pay for faux leather, however, I picked it up for $54!  It is still available online, so go grab one if you don't have a Khol's.  It is true to size and very nice quality!

{Tresses Tuesday}: A Tutorial

It’s Tresses Tuesday and I thought I would share the most fabulous video I found about a year ago on YouTube from thelipstickdiaries on how to create beautiful, long lasting curls!

The technique is quick and requires little effort (no heat)!  I do this a few times a week and I always get a ton of compliments! This method has also assisted me with growing my hair out and allows me to avoid using heat for styling, so my hair is healthier and shinier!  NOTE: If you have very long hair, this method still works, however, once you reach a point in the wrapping where you cannot put any more hair around the band, use bendable rollers {I use Conair Slip-free rollers that I purchased at a local drug store. They are also available on Amazon} to curl the remaining pieces of hair.

All you need is an elastic headband {I use the Goody Stay Put Headbands - pictured below, the wider the band, the bigger the curls}, volumizing mousse, and hair spray.

This method works well for me and stays bouncy and curly all day long and even in to day two with waves.  I did make a few changes from the video: I start wrapping my hair when it is damp - almost dry.  This will be a trial and error process for you, depending on your hair type and thickness.  Mine dries extremely fast, so even if I wrap it when its a little too wet, the curls still develop fine.  I also put product in my hair such as root boosting mousse or curl booster sprays.  I usually use Big Sexy Hair's Root Pump Plus Volumizing Spray Mousse on my roots and spread the remaining all over my hair.  I also spray each strand before wrapping it with a hair spray or setting spray.  Lately I've been using Tresemme's Climate Control Finishing Spray.  In the morning after I unwrap the hair, I comb through it to relax the curls.  It will be super curly if you follow these directions, however, the hair is easily manipulated to style to your liking.  Let me know if you  try this method!

{Review}: Maybelline Super Stay 24 Hour Foundation

Maybelline Super Stay 24 Hour Foundation
This foundation is FABULOUS for a drugstore product.  I have to admit it, blog world, my name is Jennifer, and I am a foundation snob! {cue the "hi, Jennifers"}.  Up until a few months ago I had religiously used {for ten plus years} the same foundation - Merle Norman’s Total Finish Compact in Creamy Beige {in the summer I am Buff Beige, FYI :) }.  The Merle Norman really is great, however it is very heavy {as in it has been said it is used in funeral homes in preparation for wakes} and I started to really notice my pores enlarging due to the excess that was left after my daily cleansing routines.  I decided I needed to find something that gave me the same flawless coverage, but was more dense - leaving less behind at the end of the day…. cue Maybelline’s Super Stay 24 Hour Foundation!

 I discovered the Maybelline foundation on one of my favorite beauty vlog sites and went that evening and purchased it.  Keep in mind, this is a full coverage foundation.  This means it is quite heavy.  I don't wear this on a daily basis, but it is great for days when I have after work plans and don't have time to go home in between.  Now, here's the scoop:

Pros:
  • Easy shade matching: I chose my shade by comparing the color of the foundation showing through the side of the bottle to the top of my hand and it was a perfect match {I will insert my shade here when I get home to check what it is}.
  • Minimal product needed at each application: A little goes a long way with this stuff and it really stays for a long time.  I haven’t worn it for 24 hours straight, but from the coverage I’ve gotten so far from a morning application and wearing it to work, I wouldn’t be surprised about its staying power.
  • Minimal smell: This product has little no no odor.
  • Blends well: After applying my moisturizer, I applied the foundation with a Sigma Kabuki brush then blended in with a Sonia Kashuk Blender Ball and achieved maximum coverage with little effort.
Cons:
  • The only con I have for this product right now is the fact that I would prefer it in a bottle with a pump.  I feel products in bottles with twist caps allow one to waste a lot of product when trying to get it out of the bottle.  For the price of this foundation {which is higher than most drug store brand items} a pump should have been added.

{Dressing Room/Craft Room Revamp}

I am so excited to reveal this project I have been working on for quite a while.  I recently expanded my apartment to a two bedroom and have devoted the new room to my crafting and as a place to get ready for the day.  It is still a work in progress, however, I do want to show what I've done so far.  As I have time I will update where I got all of the items shown.  I'm also still working on a few projects (like covering the ottoman).

 The finished dressing area (minus the unfinished ottoman)!

{Review}: Sally Hansen Insta-Gel Nail Strips in Walk the Catwalk

Sally Hansen Insta-Gel Nail Strips in Walk the Catwalk

I'm so excited to share this review with y'all - I LOVE these!  If you are not familiar with gel nails, I'll give you the rundown:  They are similar to acrylic nails, as they harden and last longer than regular polish.  These specific gels are light-cured.  This is generally done with the help of a UV/LED Lamp.  Sally Hansen has followed suit by offering starter kits which include lamps along with the gel polish strips.  {NOTE: I used my Sensationail lamp (review to come on Sensationail products) when applying these strips, as I did not want to spend extra money on something I already had.  I will give details below}

Product Details:
There are several options for these Sally Hansen Insta-Gel Strips:

Mini lamp starter kit ($29.99) - includes 1 Mini LED Lamp, 16 Gel Polish Strips, 1 Gel Top Coat, 2 Nail Cleanser Pads, Cuticle Stick, File & Buffer, and Instruction sheet

Full size lamp starter kit ($69.99) - includes 1 LED Lamp, 1 Gel Base Coat, 1 Gel Nail Color, 1 Gel Top Coat, 10 Nail Cleanser Pads, Acetone Remover, Cuticle Stick, File & Buffer, and Instruction sheet

Insta-Gel Strips ($14.99) - includes 16 Gel Polish Strips, 1 Gel Top Coat, 2 Nail Cleanser Pads, Cuticle Stick, File & Buffer, and Instruction sheet
{This is what I purchased because I already have a lamp}

Application:
The directions on the Insta-Gel Strips box suggest curing the patterned nail strips one nail at a time.  If you are planning to use these strips for fun patterns only, I would suggest getting the mini lamp for the cheaper price, as it is not suggested you do all of your nails at once.  If you plan to use these gel strips in a wide range of colors and patterns, I would go ahead and spend the extra money on the full size starter kit so you get the full size lamp.

As I mentioned earlier, I used my Sensationail lamp.  I am unsure if this is suggested, as I was just trying it out, but I got perfect results using it.  I will also say that I cured each nail for 60 seconds under my Sensational lamp rather than the suggested 30 seconds, just to ensure ample exposure and curing.

All you do is clean your nails, apply the strips and contour/shape them, apply the top coat, cure under the lamp, and wipe clean - that's it. {Be sure to follow the included instructions}

Removal:
Because these are gel nails, they "should" be soaked off using Pure Acetone Polish Remover.  I will admit, I peeled them off.  I know this is not healthy or good for the nails, as it removes the top layer of the nail, but once I get going it becomes a nervous habit to peel them off.  I have successfully removed gel nails in the past by soaking cotton ball halves in acetone and applying them to each fingertip and securing them with aluminum foil so the cotton can penetrate the polish.  I found this to be a lot less messy and tedious than soaking. There are also gel polish remover strips available in stores.

My results:

These only lasted a week for me rather than the two that "Sally" suggests, but I feel that it was because it was my first time using strips and my intermediate application techniques.  I also put some furniture together the day after doing my nails which contributed to extra wear and tear.  I will also say that I am OCD when it comes to chipped nails and once one nail chips, I'm ready to change them all.  I could have left these on for at least another three or four days.  I had minimal peeling on some of the edges on just a few nails which could have been fine, but I picked at them and made them worse.  I plan to redo these again soon to see if my first try's practice round proves that the second time is a charm.

{Review}: I.T. Natural Foundation Brush by Sephora

I.T. Natural Foundation Brush by Sephora ($36, Sephora, Sephora.com)

This foundation brush is super soft and blends really well. After deciding to buy it after trying another brush, I was pleasantly surprised by the results, however, the constant shedding of bristles made me give this one up.   After using it for about two months, I asked a rep at Sephora if it was normal for these brushes to shed so much.  She recommended I wash it and see how it did after a wash.  It actually started shedding more prior to washing.  I love the brush, but having to remove a dozen tiny hairs from my face after using it is not worth it.

Pros:
  • Soft Bristles- the bristles on this brush are amazingly soft!  When I was first looking at the brush in Sephora, I was playing with the bristles while checking out other brushes, and loved the way it felt against my skin.
  • Perfect Shape - this brush’s shape is great because it allows you to get into the little “nooks and crannies”, such as the crevice around your nose and chin as well as right under the eyes.  Some larger brushes make this contouring difficult.
  • Shape Saving Cap- the brush comes with a plastic cap that pops on and off to maintain the shape of the brush and to protect the bristles.  This is great for you ladies who store your brushes in your makeup bag.
Cons:
  • Brush Length - the brush has a very long handle.  Normally the handle length would not matter, but if you use a hand mirror while applying your makeup, you may occasionally bump the end of the brush into your mirror.
  • Loose Bristles - This brush sheds A LOT!  While applying my foundation I stopped constantly to remove the tiny hairs.  The bristles get stuck to my foundation, which requires me to grab the bristles and rebuff the area after with an alternate brush, which defeats the purpose of using this one.
I'm very unimpressed with this brush and it has really made me doubt purchasing another Sephora brand brush.  I would suggest Real Techniques, Sigma, or Bare Essentials.  I have several brushes from each of these brands and have been very pleased with their quality and overall performance.

{Intro & A Review}: Revlon Colorstay Longwear Nail Enamel in French Roast

Hey y'all!

I've FINALLY decided to get this blog going after a long time of taking it into consideration.  I've realized lately that I try a lot of new products on a regular basis and I am always looking for reviews myself, so what better way to offer my own than through this blog!  I hope to update you on the newest beauty products, my favorite products, "dupe" products for you savvy shoppers, and much more!

So, lets get started with a review!

Revlon Colorstay Nail Enamel in French Roast

I have been eying this color online for a few weeks, but I haven't been able to find the color at any of the stores nearby.  Well, I finally spotted it at CVS Monday and snagged it and Rain Forest (buy one Revlon product, get one 50% off this week at CVS, B-T-Dubs).

I'll admit, I L-O-V-E the color - it has a hint of glitter in shades of gold and on the nails it is just the right shade of brown, but I am already disappointed with what Revlon considers "longwear", at least with this shade.  It has already chipped tremendously and it is only DAY TWO.  I will say I have a few other shades from this line and I have not noticed such chipping so quickly, so it could be the formula used to create the shade.

This was taken the night I painted them Monday.  They were shiny (ORLY Sec N Dry Top Coat) and the color looked great.

These pictures are from today, Wednesday. Please disregard my dry skin, it's frigid here and I've been using lotion like crazy.  Notice the huge chip on my pointer finger and there are chips on the tops of almost every nail.  They have also lost their shine and are showing scratches - in two days.

I'm quite disappointed, as I do try to keep my nail colors on for about five days at a time, and I have received a lot of compliments on the shade, but the time I put into shaping and cleaning up my nails and polish is definitely not worth it for only two days of wear.  I'll be changing them up tonight or tomorrow and will be trying Rain Forest - and I'll do a comparison review, so stay tuned {UPDATED: see the review here: Revlon Rain Forest Review}
